Location, Location, Location : How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Senior Portraits
Senior portraits are a special way to capture your personality and celebrate this milestone in your life. Choosing the right location can make all the difference in setting the tone and style of your photos. Here are some key factors I like to consider when selecting the perfect backdrop for your senior portrait session.
1. Does it Reflect Your Personality
I know it’s cliché, but your senior portraits should showcase who you are and the things you love. Think about what locations best represent your interests and style. There are the usual suspects outdoors such as places like Devil’s Lake State Park, a random field or the Wisconsin River near the Wisconsin Dells. Prefer an urban vibe? Downtown Baraboo or Wisconsin Dells hold the perfect vibes hidden in their alleyways with classic brick structures, big windows and big city vibes. What about the not so usual locations? Places like arcades, bowling alleys, local businesses, the library, or any other fun hangout spots you love.
2. Consider the Season
The time of year can greatly impact the look and feel of your portraits.
Spring – Blooming flowers, fresh greenery, and soft lighting make for a vibrant and lively setting.
Summer – Golden fields, beaches, and warm sunsets create a dreamy atmosphere.
Fall – Rich colors, falling leaves, and cozy textures provide a classic autumn look.
Winter – Snowy landscapes and bare trees can offer a striking and elegant backdrop. Even though due dates are usually before we see snow, we could regroup for a minisesh in the fresh snow!
3. Do You play sports
Show off your passion for sports with bold, dynamic images that capture your strength and skill! Let’s take it to the weight room for an intense training shot, hit the locker room for a gritty, behind-the-scenes vibe, or step onto the court or field to showcase your game. Whether you're sinking a three-pointer, making a game-winning catch, or performing an incredible cheer or dance routine, action shots can bring your athleticism to life. No matter what you love, incorporating your sport into your photos is the perfect way to make them uniquely yours!
4. Choose Meaningful Locations
A location that holds special significance can make your photos even more personal. Consider spots like:
A favorite park or hiking trail
Your high school campus or sports arena
A family farm or home property
A downtown area with nostalgic charm
5. Variety is Key
Select a location that offers multiple backdrops in one spot. This will allow for a variety of shots without the need to travel between locations. Parks with trails, bridges, and water features or urban areas with murals, staircases, and historic buildings provide plenty of options. One of my favorite things to do with clients who are unsure of what to do is what I call a walk-a-bout. Picking a place like either downtown Baraboo or Dells and just walking around the downtown area making photos as we go. Some of my favorite images come from doing this. Spontaneity can spark some of the most creative ideas.
6. Dress for the Location
Keep in mind that your outfit should complement the setting. Soft, flowy outfits look great in nature, while structured and modern looks pair well with cityscapes. Consider bringing 2 - 3 outfit changes for versatility. I always say fun, casual and fancy are a great place to start planning.
7. Get Professional Input
If you are not sure of what to do, I have a list of tried-and-true locations and can recommend the best spots based on your vision. Don’t hesitate to ask for my input! I love planning an exciting and thought out senior portrait session. Good planning makes great images that you will love to look back on!
Final Thoughts
This is just the tip of the iceberg of what goes through my head when I am trying to plan every senior portrait session. The perfect location is one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and excited. By considering your personality, the season and the overall aesthetic, you can choose a location that truly represents you during this milestone moment. Ready to find the perfect spot? Let’s create some unforgettable memories!
