How to Be Prepared for Your Senior Portrait Session
"In photography, A senior portrait session is one of life's most important milestones next to your wedding day so let's make it something to remember! "
Senior portraits mark a significant milestone in your life. These photos capture your personality, achievements, and the excitement of your final year of high school. To ensure your session goes smoothly and results in stunning photos, it’s essential to be prepared. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get ready for your big day:
1. Choose the Right Outfits
Your outfit choices set the tone for your photos. Although I do not set a limit on outfits, I suggest you start by selecting 2-3 outfits that reflect your personal style while complementing the setting of your portraits. Here are some tips:
Comfort is Key: Wear clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable.
Variety: Include a mix of casual and formal outfits.
Timeless Pieces: Opt for classic styles to ensure your photos age well.
Avoid Distractions: Steer clear of busy patterns, large logos, or overly bright colors.
Add Layers: Jackets, jewelry, hats, cardigans, or scarves can add depth and interest.
2. Pay Attention to Grooming
Looking your best will help you feel your best in front of the camera and confidence is the key to a great senior portrait session! Plan ahead with these basics:
Hair: Get a trim or style refresh about a week before your session. Avoid drastic changes right before the shoot.
Skin: Stay hydrated and maintain your skincare routine. Avoid trying new products that could irritate your skin.
Nails: Keep nails clean and tidy, as they may show in close-up shots.
Guys: Do you want stubble in your images, if not then make sure to shave.
Guys: Hat hair is real, you will want images without your hat so don’t wear it to the photoshoot but definitely bring it along!
3. Bring Props or Personal Items
I know a lot of you play sports as I have been to your games. I suggest you bring what you love to the photo shoot. Sports, music, art, cars or even gamers. Incorporating props can add a personal touch to your photos. Consider items that represent your hobbies, interests, or achievements, such as:
Sports equipment (e.g., a soccer ball or hockey stick).
Musical instruments.
Books or academic awards.
Memorabilia from extracurricular activities.
Even additional clothing can be props.
If you are unsure, don’t be afraid to ask for ideas!
4. Scout the Location
Scouting locations falls more on my shoulders than yours, however it is never a bad idea to be prepared! Booking in advance allows us to discuss location options ahead of time. Whether you prefer a natural outdoor setting, urban backdrops, or a studio session, choose a location that resonates with your personality. Visit the site beforehand to familiarize yourself with the area. I’ll be posting another blog very soon covering some location and image ideas, stay tuned for that!
5. Practice Your Poses
This may seem like an odd thing but if you know you want a particular look in your images it is a great idea to get some practice in! This does not mean I won’t help you, I have tons of poses in my arsenal to make sure we make you look great! You could even start a Pinterest board with poses you love and can show me during or before your session.
6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Rest is crucial for looking and feeling your best. A full night’s sleep will help you feel energized and ensure you’re ready to shine. We can’t have you looking stressed out and tired!
7. Pack a Session Day Bag
A session bag is a great way to be prepared, summers in Wisconsin can be hot and humid. Be ready for touching up your hair or make up through out the session. Here are a few ideas:
A brush or comb for quick touch-ups.
Makeup for touch-ups (if applicable).
Blotting Papers for those humid days.
Water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized.
Any props or accessories you plan to use.
8. Trust Your Photographer
This might be the most important one, it’s my job is to make you look amazing! Share your ideas, because there are no bad ideas, they may lead to the best images and they have in the past with other clients. Relax and enjoy the experience.
Final Thoughts
You can trust me to just roll with it, many have and their sessions turned out amazing but this isn’t my senior portrait session. This is an opportunity to celebrate your journey, growth and individuality. By preparing ahead of time, you’ll ensure the process is enjoyable and stress-free. Most importantly, have fun—this is your moment to shine!
